Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born in 1864 in France. His parents a count and countess separated when he was young and at age 8 and he went to live with his mother in Paris where he began sketching. As a teenager he broke femurs in both his legs which never healed properly and caused his legs to stop growing resulting in him having an adult sized body and very short legs. Due to this he wasn't able to enjoy all the activities of young boys and spend his time immersed in art. He became an important Post-Impressionist painter, art nouveau illustrator, and lithographer, and, through his works, recorded many details of the late-19th-century bohemian lifestyle in Paris. Due to his short stature he was often mocked and he took to alcohol to drown his sorrows and prostitutes for company, many of who appear in his works. In 1899 he collapsed and was committed to a sanatorium for 3 months. After his release he returned to his Paris studio and traveled France for a time but his health began to rapidly fail. On 9 September 1901, at the age of 36 he died having created over 700 canvas paintings, 275 watercolors, 360+ prints and posters, over 5000 drawings and other works in stained glass & ceramics.

Divan Japonais is a lithograph poster by Toulouse-Lautrec created in 1893-1894 to advertise a café-chantant by that name. The poster depicts dancer Jane Avril and writer Édouard Dujardin watching a performance by the famous cabaret performer Yvette Guilbert.
