One of Auguste Rodin's most famous works, "The Thinker" was originally named The Poet (French: Le Poète), The Thinker was initially a figure in a large commission, begun in 1880, for a doorway surround called The Gates of Hell. The statue later was named "The Thinker" and Rodin decided to treat the work as a separate, monumental piece. He explained, "What makes my Thinker think is that he thinks not only with his brain, with his knitted brow, his distended nostrils and compressed lips, but with every muscle of his arms, back, and legs, with his clenched fist and gripping toes." There are multiple sizes of the Thinker both in bronze and plaster. The original lost wax cast version is about currently about 73" high can be found in front of Grawemeyer Hall on the University of Louisville Belknap Campus in Louisville, Kentucky.
