Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) was a French painter, who
is often called the father of modern art. He is believed to have
had the greatest effect on 20th century art, and had a profound
influence on other artists including Pablo Picasso and Henry Matisse.
Cezanne developed artistic interests at an early age
and studied in Paris much to the dismay of his father, a wealthy
banker. While in Paris, Cezanne influenced by Camille Pissaro who
introduced him to the new impressionist technique for rendering
outdoor light. He began painting with bright colors and displayed
his works with other impressionists of the time including Monet
and Renoir. The impressionists did not receive immediate recognition
and Cezanne left Paris and began painting on his own.
Cezanne lived and worked mostly in isolation but was
finally recognized as the master that he is toward the end of his
life.
